How to Read a Climate-Risk Screening Result: Band First, Then Trajectory

A climate-risk screening result arrives as a deceptively simple label: an asset is Low, Medium or High. The temptation is to read a High band as a verdict, a statement that a building will flood or that a site faces certain loss. That is not what a screening result means, and reading it that way leads to poor decisions. A screening band is a prioritisation signal. It tells you where to look harder, not what will happen.

This note sets out how management can interpret a result with the right level of confidence: enough to act, without overstating what the analysis can support.

Screening is a prioritisation exercise

Asset-level screening is designed to do a specific job well. It helps an organisation:

  • Compare many locations consistently, on the same basis.
  • Identify relative concentrations of exposure across a portfolio.
  • Prioritise locations for further review.
  • Examine how exposure changes across scenarios and time horizons.
  • Avoid limiting the analysis to only a few prominent assets.

It does not, by itself, determine:

  • Whether damage will occur.
  • The probability of a specific loss.
  • Whether a site is financially material.
  • Whether existing controls are adequate.
  • The cost of adaptation.
  • Whether an asset should be abandoned or relocated.

Holding those two lists in mind is the single most useful discipline when reading results. Screening is the first structured layer of analysis, broad enough to cover the whole estate and consistent enough to rank it. The deeper questions come later.

Start with the exposure band

Every asset lands on a shared Low, Medium and High scale. The bands mean:

  • Low: Limited screening exposure under the assessed conditions.
  • Medium: Elevated screening exposure worth monitoring and planning for.
  • High: Priority exposure requiring more detailed review using site-specific information.

The common axis lets unlike hazards be compared consistently across the portfolio. That is its purpose: a coastal flooding result and an extreme heat result can be prioritised on the same scale. It does not mean the two hazards are physically equivalent, or that they carry the same financial consequence. Treat the band as a way to sort and rank, not as a measure of severity in absolute terms.

Then examine the trajectory

A single band is a snapshot. The more informative question is how that band behaves over time and across scenarios. Our results are reported against a present-day baseline, then 2030, 2040 and 2050, under lower- and higher-emissions pathways. Reading the trajectory tells you whether a result is:

  • Stable, broadly unchanged across horizons and pathways.
  • Increasing, climbing steadily as the climate warms.
  • Scenario-sensitive, where the answer depends heavily on the emissions pathway.

This matters for prioritisation. A Medium exposure that rises consistently across every horizon may warrant more attention than an isolated High that depends on uncertain local assumptions and does not worsen over time. This is not a rigid rule. Asset criticality and local context still matter, and a present-day High should never be ignored simply because it is flat. But the trajectory adds the dimension a single band cannot show.

Examine the underlying indicators

A robust screening signal rarely rests on one number. Extreme heat is a good example of why. A credible heat screen draws on several indicators rather than a single threshold, which may include:

  • Annual maximum temperature.
  • Heat-index conditions that combine temperature and humidity.
  • The frequency of very hot days.
  • Warm-night conditions, which affect recovery and health.
  • The local climate trajectory over time.

Multiple indicators give a more stable picture than any one measure, because a site can look comfortable on one metric and exposed on another. Other hazards combine relevant climate signals with local susceptibility in the same spirit. When a result looks surprising, the underlying indicators are usually the first place to understand why. The individual model pages set out which inputs each hazard uses.

Add the business context

A hazard score is not the same as a business impact. The same High band means very different things for a small back-office unit and for a sole manufacturing site that supplies a whole region. Exposure should always be considered alongside:

  • Employee numbers at the location.
  • Asset criticality and replacement value.
  • Revenue contribution.
  • Operating expenditure.
  • Business continuity requirements.
  • The site's role in the supply chain.
  • Existing protection and controls.
  • The ability to recover or substitute operations.

Layering this context over the screening bands is what turns a geographic hazard signal into something a business can act on. It is also where screening hands off to the people who know the assets: operations, engineering, risk and finance.

What a High result should prompt

A High screening band is a trigger for enquiry, not a conclusion. It should normally prompt:

  • Verification of data quality, starting with the asset coordinates.
  • Review of local controls and any history of past events.
  • More detailed mapping where it is warranted.
  • A site-level assessment where the exposure and the asset's importance justify it.
  • Engagement with operations, engineering, risk and finance.
  • Consideration of adaptation options.

What a High result should not do is translate automatically into an expected loss. The screening has done its job when it has directed limited attention and budget to the places most likely to repay a closer look.

A disciplined reading sequence

The most useful way to read any result is a short, repeatable sequence:

  1. Identify the band.
  2. Examine the trajectory across horizons and scenarios.
  3. Review the underlying indicators.
  4. Add operational and financial context.
  5. Decide whether more detailed assessment is warranted.

This is not a mechanical formula that converts a band into an action. It is a disciplined review sequence that keeps interpretation honest: broad where screening is strong, and cautious where it hands off to deeper work. Read in this order, a screening result becomes what it is meant to be, a reliable guide to where attention is best spent.
